The construction industry faces an increasingly intense demand for skilled workers and a steadily shrinking supply. As the workforce ages and fewer young people choose to enter the trades, the competition for capable talent grows more fierce daily. Big J has responded to this challenge in two ways: an aggressive recruiting program staffed with a full time experienced recruiter, and creating a culture that makes Big J the employer of choice. Group interviewing and personality profiles are tools we use to make sure job applicants at the supervisory level and above not only can do what they say they can do but will fit well into the Big J culture and team.
Training and Development
Big J supports trade association apprenticeship programs, local vocational education and conducts its own apprenticeship program for the trades. All administrative, supervisory and management personnel attend monthly Seamless Team meetings as a central part of their work. In these sessions, areas of interaction that are not Seamless are identified and task groups formed to smooth out the wrinkles. Ongoing training in communication and other interpersonal skills, basic business understanding and computer systems are mandatory. The result is an ever increasing sophistication of the Big J workforce able to exercise good business judgment on behalf of our customers.
Big J's Human Resources department is supported by a sophisticated HRIS platform with a custom designed interface with the MasterBuilder system. In addition, Big J is building a significant library of online learning programs to continually increase the intellectual capital base of the company. The standard of Seamless is a challenging one, but from the top down Big J employees are in pursuit of that ideal:
